What is an Ignition Interlock Device?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a device that is installed in a vehicle in order to prevent it from starting unless the driver administers a passing breath sample. An ignition interlock device includes a component slightly larger than a cell phone that the driver blows a breath sample into. It is tested for the presence of alcohol and will interfere with the vehicle's starting mechanism, only allowing it to start if a clean sample is administered by the driver. It will also require additional samples at random intervals while the vehicle is in operation.

A driver convicted of DUI in Fort Lauderdale, Florida may be required to install an ignition interlock device in his or her vehicle when he or she applies for license reinstatement or a restricted license. The driver must pay for this device to be installed and maintained.

Installation of an ignition interlock device is just one of many potential consequences of a DUI conviction. This is why it is so important to involve an attorney to handle your case. An experienced legal professional can protect your legal rights and can help you avoid license suspension by the DHSMV as well as a conviction in criminal court.
