Prosecution Rests in Former Yankee's DUI Manslaughter Trial
Wednesday, November 10, 2010 - The prosecution rested on the seventh day of the trial against Jim Leyritz, a former major league baseball player accused of DUI manslaughter. He stands trial for driving under the influence and causing an auto accident that led to the death of a 30-year old woman, Fredia Ann Veitch and may face 4 to 15 years in prison if convicted. The defense is expected to begin its case on Monday morning.
The collision occurred early in the morning on December 28, 2007 in Broward County, Florida. Leyritz is accused of running a red light and colliding with Veitch's Mitsubishi Montero. According to expert testimony from crash reconstruction professional Donald Felicella, who testified for the prosecution, the damage in the collision and other factors indicated that Leyritz was traveling the speed limit at the time of collision. Felicella also testified that there was no indication that either driver attempted to brake to avoid the collision.
Evidence indicates that both Leyritz and Veitch had unlawful blood alcohol concentrations of approximately .14-19% and .18%, respectively.
