A veteran police officer returned to work earlier this month after receiving a one-week suspension without pay after being arrested for drunk driving in Nevada.

According to an Internal Affairs report released Monday, Officer Hilton Carpenter Goss, 51, was in Reno on Sept. 18 when he was caught by a police officer improperly crossing his lane just after midnight.

The officer stopped him and Goss had a "moderate smell of an unknown alcoholic beverage," according to the report. Goss told the officer he had not been drinking, then said he had drinks with dinner. He identified himself as a police officer in Florida.

Goss, who the Nevada officer said had bloodshot eyes, failed a field sobriety test and then blew a .119 and .123 in a breath test, which is over the legal limit of .08. Goss sent Chief Duncan Foster a memo on Sept. 23, informing him of the arrest.

Hired in April 1980, Goss has served as a road patrol officer, a member of the tactical and gang unit and retired as a sergeant in road patrol in September 2009. He was re-hired that same day as a part-time officer and now primarily works booking and transporting prisoners.

Coral Springs police spokesman Lt. Joe McHugh said the criminal charges were dropped about two weeks ago because the prosecutor in Reno did not turn over the evidence to Goss' defense attorney in the allotted time.
